What is Dragon Boat Festival?
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a significant cultural event celebrated in China and various parts of the world with Chinese communities. Originating from ancient Chinese traditions, this festival takes place on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar.
With a history spanning over 2,000 years, Dragon Boat Festival commemorates the life and death of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman from ancient China. Qu Yuan was known for his loyalty to the state of Chu and his political ideals, but he met a tragic fate when his efforts were in vain, and he fell into despair.
Legend has it that upon hearing of his death, the local people raced to the river on boats, throwing rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves into the water to prevent fish from feeding on Qu Yuan's body. This gave birth to the traditions of Dragon Boat races and eating Zongzi, a special sticky rice dumpling prepared during the festival.
Dragon Boat races are among the most thrilling and vibrant events during this festival. Teams of rowers paddle in unison to the beat of drums, with a beautifully decorated boat shaped like a dragon. The races symbolize both a tribute to Qu Yuan and a means to invoke good fortune and ward off evil spirits.
It is worth noting that the Dragon Boat Festival has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, highlighting its importance and global cultural significance.
